One Room Challenge Week 1

One Room Challenge Week 1

Guess what time it is?  It’s One Room Challenge time!
For those not familiar with the One Room Challenge (aka- ORC) it’s a biannual event (October and April) where 20 invited design bloggers makeover a room in six crazy filled weeks and blog about the process every Wednesday.  I’ll be joining in on the fun as a Guest participant and will be sharing my craziness process and journey every Thursday for the next six (really five) weeks, along with a number of other talented designers. Trust me when I say that if you need inspiration for an upcoming home makeover or just need some eye candy you need not look any further then all the talented designers linking up on the ORC. orc-black

If you are new to my blog -Hello and welcome! I’m Jana Donohoe, a full time interior designer, half time blogger, wife and mama to 3 beautiful kiddos in North Carolina. I’m really excited to be participating again as a guest in my second One Room Challenge! See some highlights from my first challenge below. Thank you to Linda of Calling it Home for organizing and creating this event so that I have an excuse to actually make time to work on my own home!

My first ORC was my husband and I’s vacation rental home in Kure Beach, NC where I made over the master bedroom and bathroom.

The Room

I have a confession to make. Up until Tuesday I wasn’t entirely sure what room I was going to be doing for the challenge. I knew it was either going to be our master bedroom or our home office. I even considered doing both for the challenge which would have made the decision easier, but that felt really overwhelming.   So, before I change my mind again I am committing to our home office for this challenge! No going back now.

In full disclosure- mess and all here is our office.img_2249

When my husband and I  first moved into our house almost 10 years ago now, we made the office/den more my husband’s space since I was still working outside our home. I started my own business more then 3 years ago and started working from home, I “semi” took over the office space. Not with decor or style so much but more with samples and everyday business stuff.  Since my husband’s recent retirement from the military, a new job and perusing his masters degree we are both working out of our home office now. Not only are we adjusting to life outside the military we are now to a degree “co-workers”!  It is apparent we need to rethink, and reorganize the space so that both of us function and work efficiently. Aside from the mess and lack of organization (both parties guilty) the space is actually really great!

The challenge:

  • Blending our totally different careers in one space
  • Finding a happy medium in style.
  • Organization is going to be huge
  • Creative storage solutions

The Plan

The size of this room is approx. 20′-6″x 14′-6″ so it’s an easy space to work with. We plan on keeping most of the furniture and adding a few more pieces. I bought my husband’s desk as an anniversary present some odd years ago so definitely keeping that… minus the lovely sheet protector! We will be adding glass to the top so he can rest easy and not worry about scratching it. The two Thomas O’Brien club chairs will also stay in the space. Note: I’ve already moved them around in here to make sure I like the flow.  I am on the fence about keeping my desk… a TBD -DIY treatment perhaps! Even though we are keeping a lot of existing pieces, you can see I still have a lot to work on!

The inspiration for my color scheme is from the picture (below). It has been in our office for many years and I plan to keep it in the space. Hint: Notice all the rich colors!

Here’s a run down on what to expect to see in the next 5 weeks.

  • Lots and lots of painting
  • DIY applied molding treatment
  • More Seating
  • Storage solutions
  • Window treatments
  • Color, pattern and loads of style.

I’ve rounded up some super gorgeous inspiration photo’s that I think convey the ideas of what direction I want to take our home office. Enjoy!

  1. I’m so glad you decided to do your shared office for this round of ORC – what a unique challenge! Can’t wait to see how you transform it (I am seriously jealous of your window!).

    • Thank you, Jana! 🙂 It’s a great space, definitely loads of potential. I can’t believe I’m just getting around to addressing it, but better late than ever!

  2. Love the inspiration pics, so I’m so excited to see the finished space! I’m especially excited to see you make the space work for both of your separate careers!!
