ORC Spring 2020.png

If you are new to my blog, Welcome! I’m so happy you’ve stopped by I’m Jana Donohoe, an interior designer in Fayetteville, North Carolina, mom of 3 busy kiddos and Peloton addict! I’m making over my walk out basement into a proper home gym and an inspiring basement patio area for this challenge.

Not Familiar with the One Room Challenge

The One Room Challenge is a bi-annual event where interior designers, bloggers and design enthusiasts participate in transforming a space of their choice and blog about it every week. So be sure to watch for those weekly updates.

Catch up on week one, two, three , four , five (cancelled), and six

I can’t believe I have been working on this project for 7 weeks! We are down to the wire now and I have been hustling to get this project to the finish line. Linda has graciously given us from June 25-July 5th to reveal our rooms due to so many current events. I without a doubt am taking the extension. Be on the lookout for my reveal the weekend of July 3rd-5th.

Before we get started on the progress report this week. I would first like to thank my generous sponsors. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with them through these tough times.

RethinkOutdoors.jpg

POLYWOOD is an outdoor furniture brand offering highly durable products, anything from dining to lounging by the pool or fire pit. They have been operating for 30 years. They were the first to create outdoor furniture from recycled plastic materials. So important for sustainability and the commitment to our precious earth.

I first heard about POLYWOOD many years ago when I was on a quest to find durable furniture that would weather well and be low maintenance for our then beach house on the NC coast. We ordered the very popular Adirondack chairs in several fun colors. After years of coastal weather, the chairs looked as good as the day we bought them to when we sold the house with them included. I am a believer in their product, their mission and so happy to have partnered with them for my ORC!

Why you should consider POLYWOOD too!

  • POLYWOOD all-weather outdoor furniture is made from genuine POLYWOOD lumber and is backed by a 20-Year Warranty. (I don’t know about you but 20 years is a big deal to me!)

  • POLYWOOD offers beautifully designed furniture no matter your style: Traditional, Contemporary, Modern Farmhouse, Beachy, Classic. (Truly something for everytone)

  • POLYWOOD seeks to help people #rethinkoutdoor and transform outside spaces into places where friends and family can gather, relax, and connect and share life moments.

  • POLYWOODS mission remains to recover and transform landfill-bound and ocean-bound plastic into durable outdoor furniture that will last for generations.

Product information you should know

  • Quick drying, durable cushions covered in Sunbrella® fabric that resist weather, salt, sun, mold and mildew

  • Built to withstand a range of climates including hot sun, snowy winters, and strong coastal winds

  • Constructed of genuine POLYWOOD® lumber that is not prone to splinter, crack, chip, peel, or rot

  • 20-year residential warranty; 3-year commercial warranty

  • Cleans easily with soap, water, and a soft bristle brush

  • UV protectant and color continuously throughout the HDPE material; requires no painting or waterproofing

  • Made in Syracuse, Indiana

  • Marine-grade quality hardware

I selected the Harbor Deep Seating Chair and Sofa for my patio and the 60” Rustic farmhouse bench for the kids playground.

The Harbour Deep Seating Chair features contemporary lines matched with maximum comfort, I am beyond excited to finally start enjoying our new comfortable patio thanks to POLYWOOD. Their team went above and beyond, an absolute pleasure to work with.

Jaipur-Living-logo-Grey.png

Jaipur Living is a leader in rugs, offering quality, value and beautiful design. I have long adored Jaipur Living and always make it a point to visit them at our trade only High Point Furniture Market. I was so sad to have missed them this year.

For my backyard makeover I wanted something relaxed, sophisticatedthe and comfortable. The Lanai collection was a perfect fit for what I was looking for. The bold stripe infuses a classic look with the colorway of deep blue and ivory. It’s also hand woven of eco-friendly PET yarns, this durable rug is easy to clean and perfect for high-traffic areas. It’s kid and pet friendly and made with recycled material. A perfect fit for me a pairing with my furniture.

I was so excited to have partnered with Sherwin Williams for this challenge, I have been using their paints for as long as I can remember.

If you are local to Fayetteville, NC I highly recommend you visit the SW store on Mcpherson Church rd. Every single time I am in there, the customer service is top notch.

During my recent visit, when I picked up my ORC paint I was helped by Mallory, the Assistant Manager. Mallory greeted me with a friendly smile when I walked into the store.  There were several other customers in the store at the time, but she was fast and efficient while making sure every customer was well taken care of.  I’ve only been to a handful of stores during this pandemic so I am still getting used to all the social distancing stickers on the floor.

When I got to the counter my order was not quite ready, she said it would be just a few more minutes.  Sherwin Williams is a hub for finding/meeting paint contractors, and one helped Mallory carry my paint out when it was finished.  It is so refreshing in this atmosphere of division to know there are still good and kind people in the world to offer a helping hand.

Mallory talked to me for another few minutes at my vehicle about the One Room Challenge and their new product, Emerald Designer Edition (It has 200 EXCLUSIVE COLORS that can only be tinted in that product!!)  She thanked me again for using their store, and headed back inside.  I highly recommend you visit their store for great customer service and a great paint product.

Here are the colors I selected.

Where would I be without my Handy Paint Pail. With over 60 hours of painting under my belt during this challenge, these products saved me from a lot of headaches.

Handy Paint pail products offer a number of painting tools to make your paint job easier. I know they certainly made my painting easier! They design products that work and are so well made and built to last.

Handy Products builds liners with 100% recycled materials. Over time this keeps a valuable material in circulation and lessen the environmental impact.

Beginning with the first Handy Paint Pail, they made a commitment to build products in the USA.

Their mission: “We value sustainability, community and creating jobs in our own backyard.”

I am honestly so excited to be partnering with KOZ water, not only is their mission totally in line with mine and all my sponsors of this challenge but the founders are wonderful friends of my from my home state Oregon.

Perfect partner

The Koz Water mission is to eliminate plastic water bottles from the earth. Cans are up to 90% more likely to be recycled versus plastic, so we decided to challenge the status quo and change the industry. For years, companies have made cost-based decisions that led them to the cheapest option for bottling, but it’s time to make decisions based on our future.

Find out more about KOZ water here and how you can help.

The last post before the BIG reveal

I wanted to wait a few extra days to post my update to get some decent progress. Last week we had started to get the under deck storage enclosed. This week it is finally all enclosed and painted…twice!

The old playground is completely gone and the new one is up and swinging. My kids are loving being able to all swing at the same time. Mission accomplished!

swings

I am not sure if I mentioned or even planned to do this screen/ fence behind the swings but I am so glad I added them to our to-do list. My husband was a little less excited about this add-on but in the end agreed it was a perfect backdrop to the swings, play area for the kids. This was a relatively easy project compared to some of the others we tackled. High five!

It’s funny, I don’t even realize how far we have come in just a week. I have to keep looking back at my last post to see where we left off. Even I can’t believe how much we have accomplished. Last weeks post we had just gotten sheet rocked. This week, my carpenter installed all the trim work and closet doors. If you watched my IG stories I talked about him having to carefully cut/template each stair to make this stair stringer/ skirt below. It looks so good all painted up, don’t cha think? Speaking of painting that’s pretty much what I have been doing non stop since Friday night. I think I have about 25 hours in so far this weekend. No sleep for those trying to meet a deadline!

I am so happy I decided to paint my stairs this beautiful sunny yellow. It instantly made me happier when it was raining…yet again out on Saturday.

After painting the night away, my husband was able to start laying down our new LVP flooring. He worked on that while I painted outside. He didn’t quite get it all done, but it’s really close. For some reason it looks brown in this photo but it is mostly gray.
