Shape Space: Week 8 ORC- Not quite the Reveal

Shape Space: Week 8 ORC- Not quite the Reveal

It’s been an exciting journey with the One Room Challenge and my vision for Shape Space is starting to come to life. While I had to pause work on the project for a bit to focus on other priorities, I’m thrilled to share that things are moving forward again—and the progress is truly energizing!

Rubber Gym Flooring Installed

Last week, the rubber gym floor was installed, and it’s already transformed the feel of the space. I chose a basic black rubber floor as a blank slate for something much more exciting: functional design elements! Think of a space where form meets function—markers and designs that aren’t just visually cool but also guide and enhance your workouts. Whether it’s zones for stretching, pathways for movement, or motivational accents, this floor will be more than just a foundation—it will be part of the workout experience itself.

A Sunny Ceiling to Energize the Space

One of my favorite updates so far is the freshly painted ceiling in June Day by Sherwin Williams, a vibrant and sunny yellow. This bold choice was intentional—it radiates energy and positivity, two feelings that are essential in any workout space. It’s a reminder to look up, stay focused, and keep pushing forward!

Walls of Depth and Movement

The side walls are now painted Caviar by Sherwin Williams, a rich black that provides a strong, grounding base. This will serve as a backdrop for functional design elements, fun art pieces, a mirror, and even a TV. It’s all about creating a space that is both practical and inspiring.

To balance the darker tones, the wall mural was installed this weekend, and it’s exactly what I hoped it would be: colorful, dynamic, and full of movement. The mural captures the essence of Shape Space—it’s all about staying active, vibrant, and motivated. Every glance at it is a reminder of the energy and determination this space embodies.

New Equipment on the Way

I’m also thrilled to share that I purchased a Peloton treadmill, which will be delivered this week! This addition marks a big step forward in shaping the functionality of the space. For now, I’ve decided to scale back from the multi-functional power trainer and start with a squat rack and new bench. These pieces will more than meet my workout needs, providing a solid foundation for strength training while leaving room to grow and evolve the space in the future.

What’s Still to Come

While the progress has been exciting, there’s still a list of tasks to complete before Shape Space is ready for its grand reveal. The screening will be installed to help define the area within my open basement layout. I’m also working on finding the right lighting solution—something that not only illuminates the space but also enhances the overall mood without being harsh or blinding during floor workouts.

And then there are all the finishing accents—the touches that will truly bring the personality of Shape Space to life. From functional decor to motivational details, these final elements will make this gym not just a workout area but an inspiring environment.

Why Design Matters in a Gym

This project is a way to show you all how important it is to design a gym that inspires and motivates. A well-thought-out workout space can transform not just your fitness routine but your mindset. When a gym feels good to be in—when it reflects your personality and energizes your spirit—you’re more likely to show up, push harder, and stay consistent.

Shape Space is about more than fitness; it’s about creating a sanctuary for movement, strength, and well-being. Whether it’s a home gym or a commercial space, the design impacts how we feel and perform. I hope this project inspires others to see the value of putting thought and intention into their workout spaces.

The Final Stretch

I’m in the home stretch and aiming to complete Shape Space in the next few weeks. Stay tuned as I continue to share updates and put the finishing touches on this project. I can’t wait to reveal the very first Shape Space—designed to motivate, inspire, and energize every workout.

Thank you for following along on this journey. Let’s keep moving forward—together!

XOXO,

Jana
