One Room Challenge | Dining Room Delight | Final Reveal!

Welcome to the FINAL REVEAL of my One Room Challenge dining room!

The moment you have all (me, too!) been waiting for is finally here. But….before we get to all the good stuff AKA the after photos, I would first like to thank Linda Weinstein, the creator and owner of the widely anticipated One Room Challenge. I have found that nothing motivates me more to get my own home looking fantastic (or maybe like an interior designer lives here) than these challenges. Thank you for giving us a place with inspiration and support to push our own creative boundaries.

This is my 5th ORC completion. Can you tell I’m a big fan by now!!? See my spring reveal here, where I transformed my foyer and hallway that is directly off of my dining room.

To truly appreciate this reveal, I think you have to see where we started and the progress in between. Check out week 1 for the oh so boring beige before picture.

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5

Below is my mood board I updated in week 3 to reflect my High Point Furniture Market finds. While I was at High Point Market, I purchased chairs, art, draperies and wallpaper that differed from my original idea board. When availability of products and bargains are to be had…you learn to be flexible and pivot! Being able to have unlimited resources at my fingertips while I was at the world’s largest furniture market really helped me pull this makeover together.

I think my family will be spending a lot more quality time in here now.

Are you ready to see the rest of my dining room now? Without further adieu I present to you my #diningroomdelight!

Here we are entering from my foyer. Despite the boring beige and blah before decor, the room itself had some pretty good bones. All the wainscoting and built ins were already in place, they just got a nice new fresh coat of Sherwin Williams Pure White paint.

To add a little interest and dimension to the small space, I had my carpenter add base cap molding to the ceiling. I knew I wanted to mimic the step detail at the top of the built ins onto the ceiling to create movement and dimension. To take this one step further, I painted a small black band, about 1/2” wide around the entire inside perimeter of the moulding to create a shadow like effect.

Voila, added dimension and interest at a really affordable price.

One of the very first items I picked out for my dining room was this gorgeous Go Lightly chandelier by Barbara Barry. I knew I wanted something elegant yet understated that also had a classic timeless appeal. I went to go see it in person while I was at High Point Market to make sure I loved it as much in person as I loved it online – I did! Isn’t she gorgeous!?

The second item I ordered was the gorgeous green double gourd lamps on the back console. Depending on the time of day they can change colors and look more blue. They come in about 20 different colors so you can really have fun with these in your own space!

I really love how the contrasting greens in the room play with one another.

One of the major design elements that came into the space are the dining room chairs I found as High Point Market floor samples during my trip in October. I originally was thinking I wouldn’t love the avocado green leather upholstered seats, but I totally do now that they are in the space! And they have grown on my husband, too!

Cat.jpg

Cat approved too! See they match her eye(s)?

In order to break up some of the black grasscloth on the built-ins, I needed to fill in with a little bit of artwork that had a splash of color with a white background. I found this amazing Princeton Springs print here.

If you’re admiring my crystal glasses, my husband and I received them as a wedding gift 17 years ago. If you love them as much as I do and need some for the upcoming holidays, fear not. I found some look- a- likes at Macy’s for you and they are on sale for Veterans Day. Score!

Isn’t this green Selenite sculpture beautiful? I love the vibrant green and texture!

061118-779-12 copy.jpg

One of the last major ticket items to go into the dining room before the accessories was this beautiful black Thibaut grasscloth wallpaper. I actually thought at one point that the installation wasn’t going to happen. I’m so happy it finally did! Do you see what a nice texture it added to the background? It’s a very fine weave, without a lot of heavy texture, as everything else in the room already has plenty of texture, and I needed the grasscloth to act as a subtle backdrop and not as the focal point.

For those of you who may not be familiar with natural grasscloth wallpapers you can learn more about the process of hanging grasscloth (it’s not easy so be sure to click if you are going to hang it!!) from my Grasscloth Guide here.

Organizing shelves can always be a little tricky. I didn’t want to overwhelm the space with too much stuff. So I tried to keep it fairly simple with just my serving ware and a few accessories mixed in like the beautiful agate box, crystal ball, bone box and of course some pretty books.

Don’t you just love my little bird collection I have going. How sweet is the little nuthatch bird picture and the little modern bird sculpture?

One of my favorite last minutes finds from Target is the adorable fox figurine.

061118-779-5 copy.jpg

This angled view from my hallway gives you an overall view of almost the entire space. The only thing that stayed in the space from before was my rosewood dining table. It is not available for purchase any longer.

Let’s talk about the beautiful original artwork I found at High Point Market. I went through a good amount of searching until I found this handsome fella. I think the blues, and touches of green and black really tie the dining room and my foyer together. I bought just the canvas and had my local frame shop add a floating frame around it and voila!

Another High Point Market find was the gorgeous Thibaut Mitford green and white printed fabric used for the custom draperies. I was extremely lucky to score the draperies as a High Point Market sample. They used them for a photo shoot prior to market. They were probably the biggest SCORE this year! Thank you, Thibaut, they are gorgeous and perfect in here.

Peeking out from the corner is the beautiful Olive branch in ginger jar by fellow ORC participant, Jana Bek. Check out her collection here!

A key piece I haven’t talked about at all yet is the area rug. My hardwood floors are mahogany and are very, very red. To help ground the space I opted for this beautiful sisal rug. It’s casual and neutral so it allows for the chairs and other colorful elements in the room to stand out. This sisal has a very fine texture just like the wallpaper. It’s meant to be the supporting role not the lead. Another important factor to consider when choosing a sisal rug or any rug is the rug pad underneath. I found one on Amazon that I am absolutely in love with. It comes in multiple sizes and thicknesses. Just another (hidden) level of comfort added to the space!

Art.png

I almost forgot about the rest of the artwork – somehow it didn’t make the “cut” during the photoshoot. I wanted to share these with you, though, so I just took these photos with my iphone. I apologize for my poor photography skills.

The hand crafted painted metal botanicals are absolutely stunning in real life. I’ve actually had them for some time now. I just had no place to hang them. Don’t you think the black grasscloth backdrop just makes them pop? You can find the hydrangea, foxglove, lilac, and primula here.

Let’s not forget about my adorable hummingbird print too! I just love him and the beautiful colors in his wings!

Kids plates.png

If you read my week 5 post – you did, right?? – you know that I had each one of my children pick out their own plate collection. Very happily, they did! I wanted our family to have a “uniquely ours” table setting. I thought it would be a fun activity to get my kids involved in this dining room, too.

So, I decided to invest in a complete set for each one of my kiddos. My idea is that when we are done making memories here in our family, they could take those dishes and start making memories with their own families…in many, many, many years! (I promise I’m not crying right now)….

Here they are above with their plate selections.

Scarlet’s collection (right), Genevieve’s collection (middle) and Grant’s collection (left)

There will be a follow up post that will focus more on the table settings, and our family in a few weeks. Stay tuned!

Cheers friends! I hope you enjoyed my dining room reveal. Have a great Veterans Day weekend ahead. Please be sure to thank a Veteran for his/her service. I’ll be thanking my hubby for his 21 years of service, too!

PLEASE go check out the 20 featured designers who revealed their rooms yesterday and the 200+ participants who are revealing their rooms today. I’ve got some good designer friends that I can’t wait to hop on over to see their reveals today!

If you remember, I mentioned in an earlier post that Better Homes and Gardens (this years’ media sponsor) will be selecting 2 participants to be a part of the 20 featured and sponsored designers next April 2019. What a dream for those 2 participants. Of course I secretly hope I’m one of them. Maybe you can put in a good word for me? Haha! 🙂

Thank you for following along on my One Room Challenge 6 week journey! Comment below and let me know your favorite part! I love to read your comments!

And, if you haven’t yet, I invite you to subscribe to my blog and connect with me on Instagram here to see what schemes I’m up to.

Cheers,

Jana Donohoe

Thank you Sheri! I thought to myself when I saw the photos that you would like that book…too funny! This one is dedicated to you. 🙂

    | 9 November 2018

OMG WOW, Jana! It came out so beautifully! Every detail is perfect. I love the color combinations, I love how you created that dimensional effect on the ceiling, I love your bird collection, but most of all I love how you made your children part of the process by letting them pick out their own set of dishes that you plan to pass on to them later. They will treasure that knowledge when they are old enough to appreciate the sentiment that went into doing that for them.

Congratulations on getting this done! I know it was a nail-biting experience at times, but you did it – again!

Thank you so much! Yes, I did it! it feels so good to be done and finally enjoy the space and to get my house back to semi normal. 🙂

I hope my children will enjoy those dishes as they get older. They all were very excited about the process in selection and getting receiving them in the mail too.

  • Jana,
Your dining room looks amazing!!! My next big home project is going to be putting in built-in bookcases across one wall of my dining room – I’ve always wanted a library/dining space. This is a gorgeous dining room, Jana! I’m such a sucker for a good grasscloth wallpaper and that dark color makes the beautiful built-ins really pop. And I’ve been eyeing that chandelier for our front entryway! Best part might be the kiddos picking out their own plateware, what a special way to bring them into the process.
